Antes de ser nombrado en 1746 Segundo Maestro de Capilla de la Emperatriz María Teresa, Johann Georg Reutter ya había desempeñado puestos de responsabilidad musical y burocrático-administrativa en la corte de Carlos VI. Hijo de un tiorbista-organista de la orquesta imperial y formado bajo la tutela del gran Antonio Caldara, nuestro músico gozó desde su juventud de un éxito como compositor que pronto atravesó los estrictos muros palaciegos del Hofburg vienés. De aquellos primeros años datan piezas tan exigentes en lo técnico y hermosas en lo formal como sus “feste di camera” La magnanimità di Alessandro (1726) y Alessandro il Grande (1732), escritas ambas para glorificar al Emperador Carlos VI, o su “azione sacra” La Betulia Liberata (1740), obras todas ellas, junto a otras de la misma naturaleza, bien representadas en este disco compacto con una selección de algunas de sus arias más impresionantes. Junto a las piezas vocales, destacan un bellísimo Pizzicato de soberbia factura y un Concerto per il clarino que no deja lugar a dudas de la pompa, boato y majestad que rodeaban la vida musical cotidiana en la corte de Viena a mediados del siglo XVIII. Pero si este disco compacto deslumbra por la calidad y elegancia de la música grabada también lo hace, y con singular intensidad, por las interpretaciones que nos brindan los miembros de Nuovo Aspetto, particularmente brillantes en las arias "Venga l´età" (de La Magnanimità di Alessandro) y "Soletto al mio caro" (de Alcide), dos obras maestras en las que Reutter nos deja como testimonio de su talento creador diálogos de infinita belleza entre un psalterio maravilloso y la delicada voz de la mezzo Olivia Vermeulen. Créanme, este es un disco excepcional.

Johann Georg Reutter (1708-1772) worked under the Emperor Charles VI and Maria Theresa as a court composer in Vienna at the time of the greatest territorial expansion of the Habsburg Empire, and in an era when the music life of the court was at a high point. At an early age he gained an excellent reputation as the creator of oratorios and works of music drama, and, through the accumulation of numerous offi ces at court and at St. Stephen‘s Cathedral, he held at the end of his life a position of power like no other composer before him.

With this CD the mezzo-soprano Olivia Vermeulen and the Ensemble Nuovo Aspetto present a fascinating overview of the work of this extraordinarily prolifi c composer, whose oeuvre has hardly appeared on disc until now. Olivia Vermeulen‘s voice has a warm and intimate timbre. The instrumental accompaniment of the arias on this recording gets its characteristic silvery tone through the psaltery - the extremely virtuoso „dulcimer“ was held in particularly high regard at the Viennese court in Reutter‘s time. In the recorded instrumental works Reutter displays a colourful and virtuoso relationship with the orchestra - not without reason Reutter exerted considerable infl uence on the young Haydn (whom he had brought to Vienna as a boy singer) and on W. A. Mozart.
