RESEÑA (La Quinta de Mahler)

The album you are holding has for many years been almost a myth. In 1995, between his tours, Roby Lakatos liked to return to his favourite playground, the Ateliers de la Grande Île in Brussels. This Russian restaurant was his rehearsal room, his laboratory. Shortly after his arrival in Belgium in 1986 the Ateliers became the place where Roby‘s brilliant rise began.

He also trained his musicians in the mythical place and met Yehudi Menuhin, Stéphane Grappelli, Esa Pekka Salonen, Nigel Kennedy, Vadim Répin and a range of other great musicians there who, after their concerts in Brussels, all wanted to play or chat with this young Hungarian phenomenon - or just listen assiduously to him…

These special moments at the Ateliers de la Grande Île sparked the idea in Roby to unite some of his musical friends to immortalise their meetings on CD. Unfortunately, Deutsche Grammophon was not convinced that it was such a good idea to bring out a jazz album so shortly after the success of the Gypsy-style La Bohème.

Yet Roby didn‘t give up. Dividing his time between Paris and Brussels in order to coordinate the different diaries of his musical guests, he managed – together with the ‘boss‘ of the Ateliers, Serge Peitcheva, and Valdimir Maidanuk of the Vieuxtemps String Quartet – to complete the project himself. It was an astute decision. Universal Music Japan eventually released the album in 2001, but only for the Japanese market.

Thereafter, Roby Lakatos with Musical Friends was almost forgotten. Deutsche Grammophon proposed other recording projects to Roby. Serge Peitcheva, head of the Ateliers de la Grande Île, returned to his institution and continued to orchestrate vibrant Brussels nights. As Roby Lakatos became more and more famous amongst violin music lovers around the world, many people asked their Japan-bound friends to bring home a copy of the precious recording.

In 2004, Roby Lakatos decided to change his recording company. Under the labels avanticlassic and avantijazz, Roby produced two of his greatest albums, Fire Dance and the extravagant Klezmer Karma. However, the real shock came when, during the second half of 2007, Serge Peitcheva decided to finally leave the Ateliers de la Grande Île. Roby was profoundly sad as the Ateliers have always been an integral part of his universe. He remembered Roby Lakatos With Musical Friends and tried to find an agreement with the various parties to pay a ‘last homage to the Ateliers‘.

But the adventure was not over yet ... Once an agreement was reached and the original source tapes were being remastered to improve the sound quality, Roby discovered three pieces that had never been released before. The first two were an homage to the Hungary of Roby‘s imagination, followed Charlie Parker‘s Donna Lee (a version of which featured as track 10 of the Japanese edition) augmented by Marcabol by Kálmàn Csèki, Roby‘s long time collaborator. That is how Roby had always wanted it.

Here it is, for the first time in its entirety. After ten years of waiting, Roby Lakatos With Musical Friends is finally available in all its splendour, throughout in the world.
