In the postwar gramophone record era, the great conductor Arturo Toscanini(1867-1957) was the first to record the work on February 19, 1950. Carlo Maria Giulini followed him only two years later and conducted Cherubini's Requiem inC minor in his first studio recording. It is that which is presented on CD here for the first time.
Carlo Maria Giulini Bornin Barletta in the wretchedly poor southern Italian province of Barion May 9, 1914, Carlo Maria Giulini under went intensive training and developed into one of the greatest and most highly regarded conductors of the twentieth century. He grew up in the small South Tyrolean town of Bolzano(the source of his excellent German) and in 1930 went to Rome, where he studied the violin, composition and conducting at the world-famous Accademia diSanta Cecilia.He could also play the viola at professional level but made the decision topursue a conducting career in 1944. Giulini was entrusted with the RAI Radio Orchestra in Rome as early as 1946, and he made his opera debut with Verdi's La Traviatain Bergamo in1948. He then set off on an international operatic career and made numerous prize winning commercial recordings before limiting himself exclusively to orchestral works from 1967. In 1982 he returned once more to opera. Giulini led numerous orchestras, but it was above all with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra with which, in his old age as grand seigneur of the classical music business, he created unforgettable concert experiences. After a lengthy illness,Carlo Maria Giulini died in Brescia on June 14, 2005.
