"The founder of the new symphony as I understand it"
Gustav Mahler
Whois Hans Rott? Fortunately, ever larger numbers of modern music lovers do not ask that question because they already know him. Hans Rott was a brilliantly gifted nineteenth-century composer, a pupil of Bruckner and fellow-student of Mahler in Vienna. At the age of just twenty-one, he wrote a highly ambitious symphony of Brucknerian dimensions that would serve Gustav Mahler as an important source of inspiration. However, he soon fell into mental aberration and depression and was committed to an institution, where he was to spend the last five years of his short life. He was not quite twenty-six when he died.
Growing acknowledgement by the music world of this genius who never reached maturity has resulted in ever more frequent performances of his main work, the Symphonyin E major, as well as in a steadily increasing number of recordings; eleven are currently available.
