For more than twenty years now Barbara Hendricks has added jazz to her vast repertory of classical music, inspired as she was by Claude Nobs, founder of the Montreux Festival. What could be more normal? This music is part of her roots, the roots of someone who began by singing negro spirituals in the church of her father, a pastor in Arkansas. Having explored the repertory of Duke Ellington, and of Billie Holiday in 2008 with the disc Barbara Sings the Blues, she returns this time to the sources of jazz by singing the blues and exploring its roots. In the earliest twentieth century, the blues found its origin in the black communities of the Southern United States; this was music that drew its origin from the spirituals, the work songs sung – and even shouted – by the slaves in the cotton plantations. The end of slavery, the regained freedom and new-found mobility of these men marked the development of a vocal tradition issuing from church music, yet also borrowing from an oral tradition imported from West Africa. Recorded live in Stockholm in 2015, this programme, Blues Everywhere I Go, takes us on a journey through these cotton plantations of the Mississippi Delta and shows us the diversity of the themes carried by the blues: from the poignant expression of human distress with songs such as Dinks Blues and the Cross Road Blues by Robert Johnson, to the political aspect of blues – and its important link with the struggle for civil rights in the USA led by Martin Luther King – with Strange Fruit, Down In Mississippi and I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free by Nina Simone. In blues, the voice of Barbara Hendricks is like a good wine: it matures and acquires magnificent colours. Accompanied as it is by the musicians and partners with whom she has been on tour for years, the savour of her voice, the variety of her tone-colours make this repertory both fascinating and bewitching.
